I remember the teacher sending home a class list so everyone would get a Valentine. We made "mailboxes" out of paper bags and decorated them with hearts and then we brought our Valentines home in the bag. It was sweet!

I remember real parties at school. And making some sort of card holder for all those cards the other kids gave you. And conversation hearts didn't come with as many saying as they do now. It was just the basics back then.

I remember loving the Valentine's party at school, decorating my own 'mailbox', delivering cards to my friends and looking at all of the cards they gave to me...maybe this is where my love for cards came from! :)

I remember DECORATING whatever it was (lunch bag, shoe box, manila envelope) that would hold our Valentines.....I think I enjoyed the decorating part more than I cared about actually receiving the Valentine's themselves!!

Let see I remember bringing in a shoe box to decorate and cut a slit in the top to make a card holder and everyone would close there eyes as each person put the valentines in boxes because back then you didn't have to give everyone a valentine. I also remember the sweethearts EVERY valentines. I stock up on them now. LOVE THEM!!!!

I think Valentine's Day is celebrated different here in Australia. We didn't hand out Valentine's as kids, it was more a grown up holiday. My memories are of my father sending my mother huge bunches of roses.

Oooooh what a fun giveaway! I remember bringing my bag of valentines to school so excited to pass them out to my classmates and anxious to see what I got in return.....ahhhhh, memories! Thanks for the smile!

Kristina-
My best memory was when I was 11. I entered a Valentine raffle contest at Hallmark and won a huge stuffed animal Panda Bear with a red bow around it's neck on Valentine's Day. Good Times!

I remember being in a quandry as to who I should give Valentine's cards to, just my friends or to everyone in the class, and if I just gave to my friends, wouldn't that make the ones who didn't get cards feel sad.

Sigh...

I remember going to the store and picking out the box of valentine's -- spending lots of time signing my name to each one -- and you had to watch which one you gave to a "boy" cause you didn't want it to be mushy --and then taking them to school and then bringing home a decorated shoe box full of cards. What fun opening each little envelope! Did I say I like paper?! Happy Hearts Day to you!

I remember loving those little mail boxes we made as kids out of shoeboxes. My Kinder teacher set up an entire post office for us, where everything was stamped and delivered and put in bags to be put in individual mailboxes. Ah... the good old days!

I remember worrying about 'what if' I didn't get any ???? Maybe that was a good thing bc it made me sensitive to make a list of EVERYONE in my class to ensure they ALL got one......I'm STILL a list-maker to this day :) Old habits die hard...but I think this is a good one :) (wink)

PS---pick me! pick me! lol :)

Oh my gosh!!! I love this little package of goodies!

I clearly remember Valentine's Day when I was in the 6th grade. We all had to make our valentine's bag/box for our desk. Even though we had to have Valentine's for each classmate, it was at that age where I thought it was cool when certain boys dropped off Valentine's in my box. It was fun to collect all that candy and cards!

Anna C.:

In elementary school we would bring in a shoebox and decorate it with construction paper. Then each student was able to deliver their valentines into the mailboxes. It was the beginning of papercrafting for me!;)

Sarah Jane:

Oh, how cute!

I remember making a special mailbox to bring to the Valentine's Day party and the fact that you HAD to give a valentine to everyone in the class. However, you would pick out the BEST ones for your favorite people. That, and you always hoped that you didn't have the same valentines as everyone else did because you wanted to have the best ones.

Kim S.:

I remember making the decorated bags that everyone put your valentines in for class. They were made out of paper lunch bags and then usually decorated with red and pink construction paper hearts and paper doilie hearts. Then they were taped to the ledge underneath the chalkboard all around the room. Thanks for helping me recall simpler times. It feels like just yesterday in one sense, and like sooooo long ago in another. Happy Valentine's Day!

I don't remember a whole lot... Valentines day is not so huge in Australia. But we used to order roses for our friends at school and then every now and then you'd get an extra one from an annonymous sender... "Oooooow" screamed all the girls... "who is it"!!!

Hi Kristina!

WOW this brought me back to when I was 6 years old. My fondest memory was being in first grade and preparing for the Valentine's Day swap....must have been my first taste of card swapping huh!LOL! Anyway we all had to bring in a shoe box, paper doilies and any other COOL things like ribbon and buttons and all the things I still play with today, to decorate our box, that would collect all those awesome valentines! I can still remember what it felt like to compete to have the prettiest box LOL, that's scary! Anyway, I do treasure that memory and have to chuckle to think things have not changed much in 50 years! Happy Valentine's Day prelude! ~Donna

I remember always wanting that one special valentine from that certain someone in grade school. A lot of time was spent decorating the covered shoebox with the slit on top... the slit had to be just right, not to big and not too small.....

you are SO generous. I love valentines and everything pink. Actually my birthday is a few days from Valentine's Day. My best memory is of a Valentine's themed Birthday party that my mom planned. She made little Valentine heart boxes for everyone, we decorated hearts, drank pink juice, ate pink jube jubes...SO MUCH FUN!!! My mom is the best!

Beatrice :

I remember decorating shoeboxes with colorful paper and cutting a slot in the top. The teacher would send home a list names so each child could bring a valentine for each classmate. Choosing the package of valentines was fun. There was always a special, much larger valentine for the teacher.
Thanks,
Beatrice

What a pretty little package of eye candy!

My mom and aunt used to have valentine parties for my cousin and me when we were little. My aunt made pink and red popcorn balls and we exchanged gifts. My cousin passed away suddenly two days before Valentine's Day when I was ten and she was fourteen. So my memories of Valentine's Day are mostly sad, as the parties stopped and pretty much any mention of the holiday became non-existent. But this is the time of year that I think of her the most. And I kind of make a big deal out of Valentine's Day with my five-year old son.

What a yummy giveaway! :)
As a child I remember decorating cereal boxes at school for all the valentine's cards from my classmates. I also remember it being such a big deal what characters were on the valentine's I was giving out...for some reason one that sticks in my mind was the Popples. Anyone remember these? (Just had a little trip down memory lane.) ;)

Christina Clarke:

I remember waking up in the morning to get ready for school. I would go down to the kitchen for breakfast and there would have be a small gift and a love note from my mom who would have already left for work and when I was young enough to have my lunch made I'd find another love note. Still to this day I get a little treat and card even though I am all grown up and live on the other side of the Province heehee I think it's cute! I love my mom:-)

Sad to say, but I really don't remember too much about Valentine's as a kid. Unless you count giving out cards in school (you gave them to the teacher and she put them in everyone's mailbox so you didn't know who gave them to you!)

I remember being so excited to pick out valentine cards at the store and choosing which card to give each classmate. I always felt like there was a perfect card for each person and always gave it a lot of thought! Hi Kristina. Thanks for the oportunity :) In Australia I don't think valentines day is as widely celebrated as in the US, but the one thing I can remember is receiving a massive card from my very first boyfriend at 13. I can still remember it....in fact, I think I still have it! lol....

Remembering Valentine's Day as a child, well I can remember at school a few girls received a single red rose from their boyfriends and the odd card was given and received. But I can not recall myself getting involved much in the day.

I remember Valentine's Day in first grade, when an older sister of a boy in my class knocked on the door to deliver a Valentine gift that had been forgotten at home. It was a pretty blue head band. She handed it to her brother and he paraded in front of the classroom and dropped it off on my desk! I still have it, 40 years later although sadly I can no longer remember his name!!

Oh, I remember saving a shoe box for February each year and then cutting the slot in the top and decorating it. Then picking out the Valentine's cards with my mom at the store or making them out of lace doilies. I loved the sentiments on the conversation hearts, but I didn't like the taste back then -- kinda chalky. I do like them now! LOL. I really liked the heart-shaped red-hots. And we always gave a miniature box of Whitman or Russell Stover chocolates to the teacher.

I remember sitting in the classroom with my friends counting how many of valentine cards we received from the boys! I also remember that my grandma always took us to the store to buy that little red box filled with valentines cards....good times!!

I remember everyone making a box in class to hold all our valentines. I remember signing each one of my store-bought valentines. I remember having a big knot in the pit of my stomach the day we all opened our boxes to look at the valentines we had received. I had an irrational fear that my box would be empty. Thankfully it was stuffed to the brim just like all my class mates boxes.

Valentine's Day has always been special. It marks my parents Wedding Anniversary. My parents were 15 years old when the met and had me. I recall a classroom Valentine's Day party where we had decorated our own "mailboxes" w/ supplies from the art teacher. For some odd reason, that year I decided to decorate my box w/ pieces of shag carpeting!!!! I mean, it was the 1970's but man, I sure hope I have better taste now! Thanks for the laughs!!!

I have two older sisters and I remember the night before Valentines we would all sit at the dining room table addressing our envelopes for the next day at school. We too had decorated shoeboxes and cut a slit to receive all those cards. What a carefree time of life that was.

The best part of Valentine's Day for me was getting to pick out my own special little box of valentine cards at the grocery store. I loved hemming and hawing over every style, hoping to find just the right ones. It was pure bliss for my 7, 8 and 9 year old self. Really, now that I'm a first grade teacher I still love it. It's my favorite holiday ever!

I remember the class parties for Valentine's Day where everyone would go around giving out Valentine's Day cards. They were so fun to get and open! Great bunch of goodies!

What I remember about Valentine's day is decorating paper bags to tape to our desks to collect our valentine's in, and then going around the classroom and handing them out. I did this with every teacher in my school from Kindergarten to grade six!

I loved the Valentine's party. We would address all the cards and be really careful to not write love because that was yucky! Then we traded them at school and brought a big bag of cards home. That was fun!

I remember handing out those cheesy Valentine's cards to my classmates. We would have a crafty envelope taped to the front of our desks and we would each take turns putting the Valentine's into each other's envelopes. I especially remember the "I Choo-Choose You" one.

Samantha VanArnhem:

That would be the Valentine box decorating contest of 1978. Everybody used shoe boxes and I lovingly decorated mine with paper doilies and lace trim. It was a big hit and everyone was oohing and ahhing over my little Valentine box until Gary Jester came in with this giant shipping box with, if memory serves correctly, an entire city made out of candy on top. A tough lesson learned in the 3rd grade about how fickle fame can be - HA!

I remember decorating the "mailbox" you made for your cards. You brought in a shoebox from home and then the art teacher gave you red, white and pink construction paper. You folded your paper and drew half of a heart on the fold, then cut it out and unfolded the paper to reveal a perfectly symmetrical heart! You also got tissue paper - which you cut into little squares and wrapped around the eraser end of your pencil - like a cupcake wrapper. Then you glued these little paper "cups" to your box for a very 3-D effect. I remember the glue we used, too - that brown stuff that looked like syrup with the red rubber top.

Fun question and fabulous giveaway! For Valentine's Day as a child...I remember decorating shoeboxes and taking them to school for valentine swaps...and being the only girl in my class who loved to give STAR WARS Valentines!! Ah... Valentine's day... When I was 10 I brought little construction-paper hearts to a winter sledding day only to realize I was one short. (How horrifying!) My favorite Valentines Day as a kid was when we were living overseas in Holland,I was the new kid..one of a ton of moves (if I told u your head would spin...but to put it in perspective, i had 5 different kindergarten teachers, in 5 countries!!) and my mom came to our class (grade 1)these big red velvet cupcakes with huge dollaps (sp?!) of red icing and conversation hearts all over them...and then taught the kids how in the states and canada we had a tradition to alter shoe boxes and give out Valentines...the kids thought it was soooooooo cool, and I was one popular kid... the next year we were still in holland (WOW!! 2 grades in one country! LOL) and I got a ton of Valentines in my box thanking me and my mom for starting a school tradition!!

I remember my first Valentine's Day with a real boyfriend. He was so sweet! I got a card, flowers, chocolates and perfume--all bought and paid for with his own money. He was so nervous because he wasn't sure what I'd think. Of course, even though I'm allergic to perfume, I loved everything. we went out for dinner and a movie that night and I just remember being so blissfully happy. Ahh, teenage love!

When I was in 1st grade, I was sick on Valentine's Day, so I wasn't able to go to school. When I returned back to school I had a folder FULL of cards from the class, so I hadn't really missed out on much. There was a boy in the class that I liked, and I guess he really liked me too because he gave me a teddy bear shaped jewerly pin that had a heart on it. It's such a cute memory!

My most vivid childhood memory about Valentines Day is the year my mom and I hand made all my valentines. We used white doilies and glued construction paper hearts to the centers (all cut by hand of course back in the day) and added shiny heart stickers. Those things took us so long to make.

My mom would always buy us little gifts and cut everything in to hearts. I always so surprised that she was so into it. Those little Valentine's day touches like pink napkins or a heart note in our lunches really made the day special. This giveaway is so awesome. Have a great night!

My teacher always made Valentine's Day extra special during my grade school years. We would start getting ready for a big Valentine's Day party weeks in advance. We'd all give each other Valentine's cards that we put into a huge mailbox we had made until Valentine's Day arrived. We would pull open the box spilling hundreds of cards all over the floor and then specially designated "mailmen" would deliver the cards to the correct person's desk. We would also have contest and other special activities. It was a great way to break those mid-winter doldrums.

What a great givaway! Well since I didn't go to school here in the US, I don't really have the same memories of Valentine's Day. Don't get me wrong, we do celebrate it, but my teacher never made me do cards for all my classmates... jejejejeje

I asked my hubby what he remembered and he said oh, just buying a box of cards for my classmates just because my teachers said so. Wasn't he the romantic one? huh?

My memory is from back in third grade. All of the third grade classes were watching a movie together (no idea what the movie was). My teacher called me out of the movie and into our classroom to give me a gift from one of the boys in my class, Nick. It was a tan teddy bear with a red ribbon around its neck. I remember being so embarassed that I don't think I even remembered to tell him thank you. I have no idea what I must have said to the teacher, I know I must have turned 12 shades of red. I think I still have that bear somewhere...

And thank you for everything you do! I LOVE your blog - so many awesome ideas!!

I remember making as many valentines as I could for all of my classmates, teachers, family and friends in kindergarten and hoping I'd get the same in return...only to find a few in my little pouch. Yay a giveaway!!
Well being only 16 (almost 17), I'm still in highschool. My school holds a 'Valentines Day Assembly' every year as a fundraiser for the graduating class- selling artificial and fresh roses, and chocolates. It's really annoying for the younger grades, but once you're a bit older it's a bit of fun sending your friends anonymous love letters :)

On Valentine's day my sister and would wake up in the morning and we would find a yummy selection of valentine's treats on our place mat. I always loved the stereotypical chocolates in the heart shaped boxes that she would leave us, even though they were not my favorite for eating. I just felt like that was a "proper" valentine's gift. I have continued the tradition with my own children. I hope they appreciate it too.

We made mailboxes for our valentines each year, but my favorite was the one I made in third grade. I covered a shoebox in aluminum foil and covered it with bright red hearts. I thought it was very creative. My favorite mailbox someone else made was a boy in fifth grade who decorated his with a heart with an arrow through it. The heart had a face and arms and legs, so on the arrowhead sticking out of it was an impaled eyeball. Too funny!

my fave v-day memory is from art class in the 2nd or 3rd grade. using red and pink construction paper we made turtles using various forms of hearts. we cut out a big heart to use as the body (folded in half). we used other hearts (open) for the face and feet. i loved this project so much i went home and continued to make turtles out of any paper i could find. i feel bittersweet calling for me to come and make a "love turtle" for old times sake :)

I remember the Valentines Day in Grade 12 when we could fill out this "Match" form and the print out would tell you who in Gr. 12 you matched with. Valentines day was always fun and full of challenges. Challenges like the ever crazy shoebox decorating contests. In addition to the little cards I would get in my classroom (and looking for the one from the cute boy and picking out all the ones with conversation hearts in them), my Daddy always would give me a special Valentine's present. I didn't realize it then like I do now, but I was his sweetheart. Sometimes it would be flowers or other times a record that I wanted, or just something thoughtful. My favorite memory about Valentine's Day as a kid was making the pretty boxes that the Valentines would go in at the class party. I've always loved arts & crafts, so I've never forgotten how fun that was. And then the big day would come when we'd go around the room and fill up each other's boxes with Valentines. I remember that my mother always baked a Valentine's Day cake in a heart shaped pan for us, and always always made a card for my brother and I, usually with pictures and bits of text cut from magazines. We carried that tradition on for many many years after.

Aww, this is so cute of you to do. I have two favorite Valentine's memories as a child. One, I think I was probably 8 yrs old, I went to school, actually to the latchkey program before school, and I realized I had left all of my Valentine's at home, so I had nothing to give out, plus if you didn't give them then you didn't GET them! So of course I was incredibly upset.... until all my little friends and the day care teachers decided to use activity hour to make Valentine's... for me! I was able to take them to class and share with everyone. Hmmm.... is that where my card making love really began???? haha My other memory was being sick on Valentine's when I was probably about 10 yrs old. I had to miss school and it was the most depressing thing for me. I loved class parties and I especially loved Valentine's. So having missed out on all the festivities, several of my classmates came by my house after school with all the Valentine's cards I received and cupcakes and candy and my parents ordered pizza and we watched movies. It ended up being one of the best V days ever! Happy V day to all of you :O) and thanks for the giveaway KW!

OMG-look at the amount of entries already!

My Valentine memory happened when I was about 16. My dad wasn't a hugs and kisses, vocally expressing love kind of dad when I was growing up. Probably like most men of that time, it just wasn't in their comfort zone.

Well, this Valentine's day dad totally caught me by surprise and gave me cute little teddy bear! At 16, being at a tender age, it really meant a lot to me. I still have my teddy bear!

All I remember as a kid, are the shiny metallic heart shaped boxes of candy and the conversation hearts, oh ya! and the in class exchanges were fun. I'd go home with a bag full of cards and goodies... I think that's what set off my love for making my own cards. :~)
I hope I'm giving my kids good memories of Valentines day.

I remember waiting by the postbox (I grew up in Dublin, Ireland)on Feb 13th for the postman to come so I could give him the extra, extra big valentine that I had filled with verses as it wouldn't fit in the postbox slot and I had left it too late to go to the post office. i don't know if the boy I liked A LOT ever got it or not :o( Fabulous giveaway Kristina!

For as long as I can remember, and up til now, my dad has given me a box of candy and flowers. He does so much better than my husband, lol.

I asked Daddy why he continues to do it, and he said, that other than my mom, I was his first real valentine. It always chokes me up.

He's 84 now, legally blind and a widower...and he never forgets!

My favorite memory of Valentines Day were those cartoon valentines cards. I loved Scooby Do and everyone else that year did too! Only a few that year had different ones. But we must not forget the decorating of the shoebox year after year! The boy I had a crush on at the time would get the candy hearts with the mushy sayings on them placed in his card. It never worked, LOL! Thanks for all you do, Happy Valentines Day :-)

What delicious blog candy! The thing I remember the most about Valentine's Day when I was a child was that we would make Valentine holders in our classroom and we would give each other Valentines. I would love to go through them and see who gave the ones with candy and also to see if any boys gave me any. hehehe! What fun!

Man, oh man - that is a generous giveaway.
We didn't celebrate Valentines day at home so I have no childhood memories of it...

The first memory I have of this holiday is from when my husband and I started dating and he bought me a designer silk flower and we went together to an Israeli rock concert... It happened 8 years ago.

Now, that we live abroad, this holiday is much more distinct.

Getting valentines at school was never the most exciting thing, but my mom usually prepared a small treat for us that was really special, something like a little candy or card. The various valentines holders that each teacher would have us craft were always, um, memorable. But the my most indelible memory is being intensely annoyed at people who insisted that "It's ValentiMes, not Valentines!"

Thanks for sharing your work with us on this blog, Kristina. It's really quite inspiring, motivating, and challenging!

I grew up in SE Louisiana, so I remember Valentine's Day as a whirl of Mardi Gras parades, my birthday, and Valentine's Day all combined! My best memory of Valentine's Day was that my mom would make a special breakfast and give us small gifts in the morning, wrapped up in the funny papers from the past Sunday (which usually had a Valentine's Day theme). I remember a red heart cut out one of my teachers gave me. It had gold glitter all over the edge, and I believe it had my name written in glitter inside as well... I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world. I refused to put it inside my book bag because I thought it would get ruined. I held it the whole day, until I got home from school, and glued it to my bedroom door. I loved that little piece of paper! So much that I remember cutting out a few dozens and gluing them all over a room for one of my boyfriends, on one Valentine's day when I invited him for dinner at my house some years ago! LOL I guess I wanted to recreate the memory!

Nicole :

Every year in High school on Valentines day (or around that time) a local florist would come to school and sell single carnations to all the students for .50 cents with the idea that you'd buy one and give it to someone special. By the end of Valentines day my freshman year I hadn't gotten a carnation so I started to walk home when some random senior drove by me and asked if I had received a flower yet, I said "No I didn't". He got out of his car and walked towards me with a single carnation in his had and handed it to me. "Here" he said, "there is no reason why someone as pretty as you should go home with out a carnation". He was and still is my sweet heart!

We went out with a friends of the family one Valentines night for dinner. I remember this boy at least three years older than me chasing me around all night telling me that I was the one for him and that I was his one true love, no one else compared. When I told him no he was reduced to tears. My brother then came to his aide and also tried to persuade me to be his girl! Are you serious?! I only just met him that night, not to mention I was only 10.
So you can imagine on Valentines Day it is a quiet affair in my home....lol.

I remember 4th grade with Mrs. Vick the clearest as the earliest Valentine's Day. Pink, Red and White. I remember it was a special outing with my Mom (probably just a normal trip to the grocery store) to pick out Valentines. I liked mine with baby animals or something like that, you know, girly. When I was in the sixth grade, I returned from recess to find a vase of three red roses and a balloon on my desk waiting for me. The card said: "I wanted to be the first man in your life to buy you roses. Love, Dad." I will never forget that. I felt so special to have flowers on my desk at school, and even more special that my dad thought of me. I still have that card...

I remember when I was in the fourth grade I thought it was time to confess my undying love for this boy I had a crush on. I didn't want him to know it was me so I didn't sign the card. Unfortunately I didn't think all the way through my plan and I forgot to give him a second Valentine with my name on it so he wouldn't suspect me. I ended up being the only one in the class who hadn't given him a Valentine so he figured out it was me. I still laugh about it to this day.

When I was a little girl, my dad always had a special valentine's card for me and some sort of gift like a toy he knew I'd enjoy. He and I share an obsession for chocolate, so there was always a box of chocolates for me, too! As I became a teenager, the toys were replaced by flowers and a book or other small gift. But the highlight of Valentine's Day for me was the DATE I got to have with my dad. He always made time for just the two of us to go do something together. Unfortunately for my husband, Dad is a hard act to follow!

I remember making the Valentine's mailboxes at school for all my Valentines. I also remember that every year my dad would by us the hearts with the chocolates in them. Then he would call us to the table like he was going to have a "serious" conversation with us. When we pulled our chairs out to sit down, the hearts would be on the seats of our chairs. We knew what was going to happen but it was still fun :) Thanks for the chance to win!

I remember playing with that "sweet" white paste making our Valentine Envalope to collect all those Valentines we would get. Wow I can not believe you asked this question. All week I have been making Valentine cards for the Cards for Kids project that is going on. Making these cards brought me back to my childhood days. May favorite thing was every year our teacher would tell us to make a mail box so that our classmates could put our cards in our mail box. I just loved decorating the mail box. One year I used aluminum foil and red doilies and man I thought it was the greatest thing I had ever made...lol. My love for paper crafts began at a very early age and thank goodness I stuck with it. Hope you enjoy your week and thanks for the chance to win some blog candy.

I remember back in elementary school, we would making little heart shaped "mailboxes", labeled with our names, and line them up under the chalkboard at school. Then throughout the week until Valentine's day, everyone would have the chance to put cards in each others' mailboxes. Back then, you gave a Valentine's day card to everyone, and so I remember getting to pick out these really cute Care Bears Valentine's day cards at the grocery store to give to the kids in my class. Thinking back, I don't think the boys liked the design as much as I did, hehe.

Each year my mom would make a really nice dinner and on our plates before dinner would be a card with a small gift. My mom seemed to always pick just the right card for each of the 5 of us. Even as a teen when I didn't want to admit it I looked forward to seeing what she picked out and what message she wrote. I still have most my cards and read through them every once in a while.

My favorite Valentine's Day was probably when I was about 9 or so. I was aware of the holiday and wanted to celebrate it but was to young to have a significant other of course. I was sad that at the time I didn't have a close friend to give a gift to or do something special for. I went to bed the night before Valentine's Day just thinking I would not worry about it and just treat it like another day. When i came home from school that day my parents had put a heart shaped box of chocolates on my pillow. I loved it and it made my whole day!

I remember in second grade, I had to go home from school on Valentines Day (which was a Friday) because I got sick with a fever and sore throat. I had to leave my Valentines cards for someone else to pass out for me and I didn't get my cards (and candy!) until Monday. Also, I didn't get to go to the local nursing home that afternoon with my Camp Fire troop to pass out Valentine's cards that we had so lovingly handcrafted. It was a bummer! :(

Hey Kristina!

What a great question! Think I'll use it as a topic on one of my 2009 scrap pages! ---I remember my mom always helping me decorate a shoebox as a maibox for my valentines I was to receive at school. I think my love of paper craft began then when I would watch her cut out intricate designs from construction paper as embellishments. When working on this project, it was the most important thing and she would give her full attention to is. What special memories! Now, she continues to create...she is a member of one of my monthly stamp clubs! Still having fun! She will be 77 years old this March!

I, too, remember decorating the shoeboxes and making out valentines for my classmates. But one of the other memories that I have of Valentines Day as a child: Making more Valentines at home for my friends that weren't in my school class. You would address the cards, then go out after dark, and deliver your special Valentines. It was a "ring and run" affair, and we would do our best not to get caught by those who came to the door. So fun!
Thanks for reminding me. I think my boys will have something fun to do for Valentine's Night this year.

i remember a specific valentines memory - a little vague as it was quite a while ago :-) but i was 5 and my mother and i were going to her ob gyn's office for a monthly visit - she was pregnant with my sister. My mother had bought me a box of conversation hearts - they came in a little plastic heart shaped container. I love conversation hearts and this was a special treat for me - to get a special box all to myself. I'm sure my mom bought me the candy to keep me occupied while she was seeing the doctor. And i'm also sure she wouldnt remember this little trip to the doctor (my mother is almost 80 yrs old now)or that box of candies - but that little box of candy was pretty special to me. I love conversation hearts to this day.

Because I've always loved paper and designs, Valentines Day was much anticipated by me as a child. The decision at the drugstore took much thought, and cutting them out and writing on them was a delight. At school my teacher had us make huge pale pink envelopes, heart-shaped and open at the top. These were adhered to the classroom walls, below the blackboards. We would "deliver" our valentines, then careflly take our big hearts home, to pour over our special valentines from our classmates.

I'm sorry, but I don't remember anything about Valentine's day from my childhood.
Here in Finland the celebration is quite new thing and first time that I remember was about 10 years ago, when pupils (teenagers) in the school I teached, arranged a Valentine's day party to eachother. They decorated the big hall with hearts and we could sent eachother cards and messenges through the central radio there. Okay, my memory as a child celebrating Valentines Day: NONE! This is because here in Germany VD is not celebrated the way you do in the States. Mostly only the grown-ups give each other something, a red rose for example... it's not that big over here. You can't even buy a greeting card here regarding VD. Isn't that bad!?!?
By the way, great goodies! Would love to win these.

We don't really celebrate Valentines Day here in Oz like you americans but I must say my fondest memory of Valentines day was about 5 yrs ago when my mum bought my dad a card and misread it... She thought the card said "For your husband" and it actually said "From your husband" very funny!

Karen:

The best thing I remember about Valentine Day was me and my sister getting a Valentines Day card each from my Dad. We were only about 11 and 9 and at that age when the whole Valentine Day thing was really serious. I didn't stand a chance of getting a card as we had relocated from the North of England to the South and had a common northern accent which had alienated me from my class mates - can you believe kids can be so nasty. So my dear old Daddy sent us both a card, the gesture even at that time was huge but as I look back I realise just how much of a kind thing it was that he did.

I also remember the celebrations at school. We would decorate lunch bags, hang them on the front of our desks and then walk around to put our store bought cards/suckers in the appropriate bags. It was a HUGE deal to get a certain type of card each year - Strawberry Shortcake was the #1 one choice for me several years in a row!

First thing I recall is making our own mailboxes out of an old shoebox. We had to have a new one every year; cut a slit in the top to insert the cards and decorate it with little paper doilies and construction paper - so fun! I think making this box for Valentine's cards was probably the clue to my lifetime love of crafting, especially handmade cards! Hey - can you call this my first altered art???

Becky A.:

I remember the tension in class before we were allowed to open our "mail boxes" to see if we had any Valentines. This was in the days before class lists sent out requiring that everyone bring a card for everyone else! We'd bring a box from home and decorate it usually as part of "art" class. On Valentines day we'd all "mail" our cards or notes. It was almost always handmade valentines. I remember the boys would scribble something on notebook paper and pencil in a heart on it and call it a Valentine :-). Some girls went to great lengths to make large and attractive designs. The teachers box was always full of course and she would make sure that each student had at least one card in their boxes. If we had a really great "home room Mom" we'd have a party too!

I am SO thankful for rubber stamps today! I still can't draw or cut out a heart "free hand" to save my life! Embellishments have come a long way too! Paper doilies (just how is that word spelled???), Elmers glue and glitter were the in thing then. Sometimes leftover red ribbon from Christmas :-).

Hope you all get plenty of Valentines wishes in your boxes this year! Blessings -- Becky

I remember getting two valentines cards many years ago. From one I knew who send it to me. That was a boy I really liked. And the other card I didn't know who send it to me. I still don't know who send it to me.

A few years later I got a valentines card from my boyfriend but he always wrote his name on the card. Everytime when he did this I explain to him that it is normal to send a card to your valentine and not mention your name!

As an elementary kid, handing out valentines was too much pressure for me. I worried about who was going to give me a valentine, what if I handed out one that was too MUSHY, and what if I didn't get many. Too stressful!

I always remember getting my first Valentine's Day card. I never found out who it came from (it was probably my parents!!). And of course in school the day after St Valentine's Day there was always someone who said she got a gazillion. My friends and I were always happy just to get one! I also remember we used to pass funny Valentine poems to each other in class, when teacher wasn't looking, to use in our cards. The boys and their friends in our town must have all got the same poems - we weren't very original!

Wow, thats a lot of comments, My favourite valentines memory was when I was at school, a really shy but lovely boy gave me a valentine card, everybody laughed at him, because we were in two different groups of friends and apparently we weren't 'right' for each other but I loved it! We went out for three weeks without anyone finding out, I was 13 and as far as I was concerned at that time, he was the 'love of my life'.

I remember getting mail. I didn't care if it was only at school and everyone had to bring in Valentines. I remember having a brown lunch bag tape to your desk and everyone took turn going around the class dropping their card in your bag. You didn't get to open them until you got home. I also remember running home as fast as I could just to rip open the bag. I think I enjoyed it as much as trick and treating. Maybe that is why to this day I love sending and receiving cards.

Okay, I don't want to be a downer about Valentine's Day, but when I was a kid it stunk. I wasn't necessarily the most "popular" kid, so what I remember is receiving a lot of valentines that the kids in my class were more or less obligated to give me because if they didn't give one to everyone they couldn't give one to anyone.

But now I am older and more or less wiser and Valentine's isn't so bad, especially now that I have my own sweetie to share it with. I also love creating unique Valentine's for my daughter to give out to her classmates. Last year she gave out little purses that held Hershey's nuggets and this year we are stepping it up a notch to give out iPod's that hold the ever popular candy hearts :)
