5 SUPER EASY Watercolor Backgrounds for Cards + NEW Water Media from Waffle Flower

Happy Friday, all! Today I have a fun video for you with 5 super simple and easy watercolor backgrounds! I also tried out the new Water Media Mat from Waffle Flower (available for preorder at Waffle Flower and Simon), and did all my watercolor painting with a single flat watercolor brush and some liquid watercolors from Dr. Ph. Martin’s (all colors are from the A Set of Radiant Concentrated Water Colors).

(Wondering what I used in this video? Everything is linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post, or in the text below. Compensated affiliate links used when possible).

I used five colors of watercolor for my simple backgrounds: Alpine Rose, Orange, Lemon Yellow, Grass Green, and Turquoise Blue. These five colors would be a great start to any liquid watercolors collection. I love how bright and cheerful the colors are!

The new Water Media Mat worked out great for my painting today (especially with my DIY plastic tray over the wells), and there are SO many more things to be done with the mat! Be sure to check out Waffle Flower’s playlist of videos at YouTube for more ideas on how you can use the Water Media Mat (including techniques like mirror stamping).

Your “super easy” water color techniques are very inspiring, I want to try everyone of them from your various videos; but, alas, I end up making watercolors faster than I get cards made from them.

I have a question guys. If I don’t have these watercolour inks but I have watercolour paint, in tub and pan form, watercolour pastels and on the ink side, both type of distress ink, and most of what is sold on sss, that you promote,,,

Can I do this technique with something else than watercolour inks??????

    Thanks everyone in advance

Ingenious to use the plastic tray over the water color mat to preserve the white squares. Love rainbow techniques & how you incorporated that color scheme into your backgrounds. Hope to see how you finished off cards with these.

Loved the backgrounds you created, they were just wonderful. Will look for the quarter inch masking tape…that was really intriguing!
I’m not being snarky, really…just wondering if you didn’t defeat the purpose of the watercolor mat by using the hardboard and the plastic insert? I’ve been using mine without staining, although I do admit I don’t have liquid watercolors. I love that the silicone holds my paper in place well, and the paints, wherever I use them don’t run and always clean up well. It is really a lovely tool. I can imagine for some things taping to the silicone if need be, though I haven’t done that big a project yet.

Thank you Kristina!! My favorite mediums will work wonderfully in the Waffle Flower Water media mat! Cleanup was easy peasy and also perfect to flip around for left-handers :)

I am legally blind with only 30 per cent vision in my right eye but I paint because it makes me happy. The thing I look for (sorry no pun intended) is bright colour because I can’t see fine details but I can see light and colour.
I was absolutely stunned at the pure colour in the blog. I am definitely buying a set because for me it would be so much easier but more importantly so much brighter and pure.
Thank you I truly love it. I don’t have a lot to spend but I do choose to spend it on product that will work.
