Sink Into the Joy

Two of my nieces and two of my nephews at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, September 2007.

From one of the keynote speakers at the EVO Conference last weekend, Brené Brown:

“We need to be able to embrace joy. I think we struggle to do that…

Joy has become foreboding in our culture. How many of you have ever looked at a child–your child–and you’re overwhelmed with bliss and love for about five seconds before you’re overwhelmed with thoughts of something horrific happening?

It’s like, “Oh no, I’m gonna beat you to the punch, Vulnerability. I’m gonna imagine all this bad crap happening so when it does, I’m prepared!” But what ends up happening is we’re not prepared. You can’t prepare for that kind of stuff. We miss out on all the joy.

Part of authenticity is the willingness to sink into the joy even when it’s terrifying.”

Question: How are you embracing joy today?

EDIT: I edited the question a bit after posting this entry this morning. Just a quick clarification. :)

Why do you make cards?

I didn’t start out making cards. I started as a scrapbooker. I loved pulling items together, I loved creating something, I loved working with paper, and I loved ribbon. But like most of my artistic phases, soon I wasn’t taking quite as many photos and didn’t have much to scrapbook. What’s a paper-loving ribbon-obsessed person to do?

Start making cards. :)
