Designer Cuts (Digital cutter kits)

by Kristina Werner on March 24, 2009

in Cards, Stuff to buy

Hi all!

Today is Tuesday so that means I have some new digital kits in the TwoPeas store. :) This week, I have three digital cutter kits. All three kits have four different file formats, so if your digital cutter can cut GSD, AI, SVG, or JPG files, you’re in business! I think that covers nearly all digital cutters out there as long as you have software on your computer that can open one of those file formats.

For those of you with Quickutz Silhouettes, you’ll recognize the GSD format, and those of you with Cricuts should be able to cut the SVG files as long as you have Sure Cuts A Lot. And those of you who can open Adobe Illustrator files can open the AI files.

Hmm… I think that covers all the technical aspects. If you have questions, please leave a comment. I might be able to answer it. LOL! The only cutter I’m familiar with is the Silhouette, but I’m sure other readers might be able to answer your questions about cutters other than the Silhouette. :)

Anyhow, here’s what the kits look like…

Love the card shapes, makes me wish I had a silhouette!

sherine monir March 24, 2009 at 6:45 am

i like these cards.. and their colors

Andrea B March 24, 2009 at 6:49 am

Love the cards and the digi kits are awe-SOME!

Emmy March 24, 2009 at 7:43 am

Wow, you have been a busy girl. I am wanting to buy a digital cutter, I just haven’t decided on one. I love these sets you designed. Your cards are great.

Savitri March 24, 2009 at 7:50 am

Very cool! I might try out the tags on my KnK. I made a few stuff but I’m too lazy to edit what I have or actually make anything out of them after. They’re just sitting on my computer he he he… I think my pointy tags are too pointy :p

Vera March 24, 2009 at 7:54 am

Now that is AWESOME! I’ll definitely buy these to use on my silhouette! I do have a request: I’d love to see more words like the ‘merry’ block that you made for fun a few months ago. I love cutting words on my silhouette. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us!

Lisa March 24, 2009 at 8:30 am

Wow…what great things!!! Where can someone like me (who’s basically lost when it comes to all of this computer stuff)learn about going digital? The possibilities seem endless!!

I absolutely love the card shapes kit, but they all look great! You are so talented, Kristina!!

Also…is this a case where you used the Tombow Mono to adhere the intricate “loopy thanks” to your card?

As always…thank you!!

KatieTurtle March 24, 2009 at 9:04 am

I Krista, WIll you be able to size the images on the silhouette or are you locked into the specifics of the image?

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 9:38 am

Lisa, yes, i adhered the “thanks” with Tombow Mono Multi. And if you want to get a grasp on digital scrapbooking, you might check out some of the free tutorials over at twopeasinabucket.com. Sande Krieger is teaching an awesome Photoshop Elements class.

Katie, yes, you can resize the shapes.

Avital March 24, 2009 at 9:52 am

Excellent kits, very creative and very elegant. Too bad I don’t have a digital cutting machine…

Adriel March 24, 2009 at 10:27 am

Kristina, you did a wonderful job! If I had one of those cutters, I’m sure I would buy one (or all!!!) of these kits! They look fantastic!

A question: Is a digital cutter better than a manual die cut machine (ie, Big Shot). I’m wondering which is the better purchase when I’ve got the dough! Are they virtually the same, or are there advantages to either one?

Thanks!! =)

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 1:06 pm

Adriel, there are advantages to both. Digital cutters generally cost more upfront than traditional diecut machines, but the digital files are definitely cheaper than dies in the long run. So, it might save you a bit of money that way. However, a diecut machine can emboss and scor and can be more portable than a digital cutter. It’s really up to you. :)

Kelly Marie March 24, 2009 at 11:40 am

I have a question, Kristina. I know you are a mac user. I also have the silhouette and use photoshop/illustrator with craft robo to cut with the silhouette. Would any of these files work with that type of set up? I hope so, because these kits are amazing!! :)

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 1:04 pm

Kelly, yes, you can open the AI files and cut from Illustrator. :)

Anthonette March 24, 2009 at 12:50 pm

Super cute cards, Kristina! Congrats on the digi cutter kits. I don’t have a digi cutter, but I wish I did.

Kelly A. March 24, 2009 at 2:01 pm

I just bought a Silhouette SD but haven’t had a chance to try it yet. Kristina, will I be able to use the Card Shapes Designer Cuts with that machine? *fingers crossed*

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Kelly, yes it will work on ALL Silhouettes. :) You should be able to cut them using your new machine. And that’s so awesome to got one of the new ones. I’m plugging along with the old version. :)

Brittany March 24, 2009 at 2:05 pm

OMG LOVE THEM!!!!

I am going to have to buy them after I move (this weekend). I have to pack all of my scrap stuff up. :( So, after its all out I am going to get these! I can’t wait!!!

Susanna March 24, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Brilliant! I’m thrilled that you came up with these!!!! I’m buying all three… if you could write me a note for my addiction that explains to my family why we’re not eating meat this week, that would be great!

Kelly A. March 24, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Kristina, I’m so glad to hear I’ll be able to use your crafty goodness with my Silhouette SD. I sold my Making Memories Slice and all of the design cards I had, as well as the carrying case and tool kit, to get the money for the SD! :)

Maria Jesus March 24, 2009 at 3:00 pm

oh wow, so this will work with my silhouette, i love it :), very nice Kristina :)

Marisa G March 24, 2009 at 3:48 pm

I love the card and journal shapes! Very cool. What are the circular designs for, the double circles that look like they fold in half? What did you have in mind when you designed those?

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 4:03 pm

Marisa, those make circle window cards similar to this one: http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/?p=489 and also this one: http://www.kwernerdesign.com/blog/?p=463

Kelly Marie March 24, 2009 at 3:52 pm

I am so excited!!! Thanks for helping out your fellow mac users with the files :) :).

Melanie March 24, 2009 at 3:55 pm

Girl you are amazing! Very nice creations … I had no idea all the possibilities I had at my finger tips with my Cricut. Thanks for insight to the Sure Cuts Alot website and your fabulous work. I am purchasing all three.

Marisa G March 24, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Too cool! Thanks for the extra links to the circle cards. I have a Silhouette…can’t wait to purchase the kit and try these out.

Barbara March 24, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Kristina,
I have the old blue wishblade. Do you know if these files will work with it. I do not have the software Create and cut

Kristina Werner March 24, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Barbara, I’m not sure. I would suggest looking at the files you already have on your computer that work with your cutter to see what their file extension is. If it is .svg, .gsd, .ai, or .jpg, then you should be able to use any of my digital cutter kits. :) Hope that helps!

Sunshine March 24, 2009 at 7:36 pm

I just bought the Card Shapes Designer Cuts and the Journaling Shapes 1 Designer Cuts to use with my Silhouette. I’ve loved the circle cards you’ve made in the past but haven’t gotten that adventurous with my coluzzle. Now it will be so easy to cut a circle card. Can’t wait to try it out. Thanks!

Pam Heorld March 24, 2009 at 8:52 pm

Oh that I had a cutter! You make it look like so much fun! Sigh!

Sheri March 25, 2009 at 12:09 am

Hi,
I am from Australia and are very interested in this digital set up. Are you able to advise where I could get all the software to set this up? Thanks

Kristina Werner March 25, 2009 at 6:08 am

Sheri, it depends on what digital cutter you have. If you have a Quickutz Silhouette and you’re on a PC, you can use the software that came with the machine. If you’re on a Mac, you need Adobe Illustrator and the CraftROBO plug-in (just google it). If you have a Cricut you need Sure Cuts a Lot software (link to buy it is above in the main entry and I just learned it works on both PC and Mac). I’m only familiar with those two cutters, but if anyone else here has experience with other cutters, please leave a comment to help Sheri out. Thanks!

christina hill March 25, 2009 at 3:06 am

These are fantastic. It makes me want a Silhouette now.

IfatArt March 25, 2009 at 4:30 am

Wow! Those are lovely!
I have to get the Cricut’s software..

Kelli March 25, 2009 at 9:43 am

OMG! I love these! I am running off to buy them right now. I have had a Silhouette for over a year and can count the times I have used it on one hand! Thank you!

Melanie March 25, 2009 at 10:36 am

Sheri,
I bought the Sure Cuts a lot Software last night and it is SUPER easy to use and to set up, the initial price is a little bit of a sticker shock (it was about $80), but after using it with Kristina’s designs I completely forgot about the price that I had to pay to get the software. You can get a 10-day free trial to see if you like it. Cricut makes something called Design Studio but I did not see where you can import the .svg files. Hope this is helpful. Email me directly if you want to discuss more (melanienass@yahoo.com).

Kelli March 25, 2009 at 12:07 pm

http://caffeineinduced.blogspot.com/

Okay, it took me awhile but I got it figured out and promptly set about cutting! I’ve added my blog link so you can see what I made! Love it!!!

naomi March 25, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Hi! These are great! I just wish that L purchased the silhouette instead of the slice. Will you make anything for the slice? I know we use an SD card but maybe something that i can save on a SD card then we can upload it to our slice. Please let me know. Your kits are amazing!

Tina Marie March 25, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Now that’s a reason for me to invest in SCAL!!!! Are these going to be available for purchase for a litle while?? I love your designs.

Kristina Werner March 25, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Tina, as far as I know, they’ll be available to purchase for a long long time. :)

Kelli March 25, 2009 at 2:30 pm

My friend called and she told me you twittered about me! I can’t believe it!

Lenita Gratz March 25, 2009 at 6:36 pm

I had no desire for one of these machines until seeing your Designer cuts Kristina…you are killin’ me here! Adorable!

Jody March 26, 2009 at 9:54 am

Wow! These are great!! Now I just have to get one of the digital cutters. I knew I would find something that would tempt me to buy one eventually. :)

Clare Bird March 26, 2009 at 11:00 am

Hi Kristina, I just downloaded the designer cuts from Two Peas, and I have Craft robo, but when I go to open them it says file not supported. Am I doing anything wrong, or are they just not compatible? The brushes are great by the way! C x

Kristina Werner March 26, 2009 at 12:28 pm

Claire, which software program are you using? Are you trying to insert the files into a new document, or are you just File>Open opening the files?

Tina Marie March 26, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I put the word out on the two Cricut groups that I am in. I’ll keep spreading the word.

Clare Bird March 27, 2009 at 5:03 am

Hi Kristina, thanks for your reply. I have Robo master and I’m just file>open opening the files, I don’t know how to do it any other way. Would really love to be able to use them C x

Kristina Werner March 27, 2009 at 8:40 am

Claire, I’m going to do a bit of troubleshooting to figure out the problem. I’ll let you know as soon as I figure it out. Thanks for your patience! :)

Emma March 27, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Hi kristina,
I am stressing out because I’m not sure what I did wrong? I purchased the card shapes kit & downloaded it now for some reason I cannot open the file with my sure cuts alot. When I bring up the SVG folder, all the folders that pop up have the little cricket picture on them. So everytime I click on one of the folders, my cricket design studion comes up but with no Kristina designs! Help please !!!

Kristina Werner March 28, 2009 at 11:30 am

Emma, try opening the files from within SCAL. That might work better. :)

Clare Bird March 28, 2009 at 4:33 am

Hi Kristina! woo hoo! I have my files, I upgraded my Robo software after a little help from my UK scrapper buddies, and it all works! (am a little excited)Thank you for your help, you are a star! C x

desertpea March 28, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Hi Kristina! I made some square envelope templates to match your cards… let me know if you want the GSD or AI files. Right now, I have the SVG files for SCAL/Cricut users available publicly.

desertpea March 28, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Emma, you have to open SCAL first, then click “Import SVG file” under the File menu. Then locate Kristina’s .svg file on your computer and click “OK.” Then you can resize it right on your virtual cutting mat prior to cutting with your Cricut.

Hope that helps! :)

Emma March 28, 2009 at 9:54 pm

Okay, I just tried that but it said it was unable to open file. What do you suggest I try next? I am lost :(

Wendy in MD April 1, 2009 at 6:52 am

I would SO totally buy your digital cutter kits, if I could just figure out how to use my CraftRobo. It’s been collecting dust for two years.

Angie Cortes April 1, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Help!! I just bought the card kit and flowers and my wihblade won’t open the gsd files. Not sure what I am doing wrong hoping somebody else has a solution!! Thanks!

Kristina Werner April 1, 2009 at 4:48 pm

Oh, I wish I could help you. I know that the Silhouette and Wishblade are essentialy the same machine (sold under different names), so you might try downloading the Quickutz Silhouette software and cutting from that? I don’t really know what to suggest. Sorry!

Cheryl B April 1, 2009 at 5:59 pm

I have an old Craft Robo with robomaster 2.4 which couldn’t recognize the newer GSD files. I had to open the SVG file in Inkscape (or whatever comparable program), save it as a DXF, open robomaster 2.4, load the dxf, then save it again as a GSD. If anybody has an easier solution, please let me know.
