Morning, all!
Today marks the beginning of another Friday Focus series, this time on one-layer cards. :)
In today’s video I wanted to show you a few tips for creating top layer card, including:
- Limit your stamping ink colors to just two. Use one less that the other and it will become the focal point. In this case, the red ampersand.
- Overlap images. By overlapping the stamped label shapes with the handwritten sentiment, it gives a multiple layer look without adding any layers to the card.
- Consider using a white pen to create intricate areas. By adding a small lined border to the edges of the card, and overlapping the stamped banners, it “grounds” the top edge of the card which might have felt empty otherwise.
For the stamping on the card I used My Mind’s Eye’s Baby stamp set from the Miss Caroline collection. This stamp set has a lot of images and I feel like you get a lot for your money. I’m seriously loving My Mind’s Eye’s collections right now. :)
Anyhow, enjoy!

New Tim Holtz Class
Many of you know that Jennifer McGuire and I started Online Card Classes last summer. We’re so happy to have Tim Holtz teaching a class at OCC this month! He’s amazing to work with and has more talent in his little pinky finger than… just about everyone! LOL! He has an awesome class planned and I hope you’ll check it out!
You can register for Tim Holtz’s Creative Chemistry 101 HERE. There’s also a great video there showing how we run classes at OCC, too. :)

Great video – thanks for the one-layer card tips and design techniques. ;-)
Oh, you just know how to give an OLC lovin’ girl heart palpitations, doncha’? :) FAB!!!
thanks – I can do this too! appreciate 1 layer tips!
Lovely simple card, the splash of pink/red really works.
What is the paper behind the card- it’s so pretty.
Thanks! The paper in the background is from My Mind’s Eye’s Bright Side collection.
Happiness is watching your videos with Mannie making noises in the background. Have a great day!
Yay! The Queen of the One Layer cards is baack! Happy to see this new card using some stamps I’ve been admiring lately!!
I really like cards that are made using kraft (or similar) paper. It’s one of my favourites. Love the wood look of the flags.
Barb from Toronto, Canada
I love the simplicity of this card.
Glad you’re back! Cute card! I ordered that cardstock today to try it out!
I love the graphic feel of this card. Blessings!
Thank you for the great card and lesson. I love those wood banners. So glad that you’re back!
What a lovely card! And so simple! I like that the lines you drew around the card echo the text boxes you stamped. You have such awesome handwriting!
Thanks for focusing on 1-layer cards. I tend to be layer challenged, so this was reaffirming that beauty can still be pretty in 1D. :)
I’m all signed up for Tim’s class. In fact I’ve already posted this to the pre-class gallery, just to get my juices following lisabarrie.blogspot….
