Friday Focus – Unusual Uses #1

Happy Friday!

Today’s card and video are the first in another miniseries I’m calling Unusual Uses. :) I’ll be taking items around the house and using them in non-traditional ways in cardmaking. I thought it would be super fun! Plus, I hope it encourages you to step outside the box and try using more items around the house.

For this card, I created a sparkly polka dot pattern with fleck nail polishes! It sort of looks like Stickles Glue Glitter, but I think it’s even more sparkly, and it’s made to dry with a super smooth surface, so it doesn’t have that grittiness that Stickles has sometimes. Anyhow, I love me some nail polish, so it was a natural progression to figure out a way to use it in papercrafting, right? :) I let the polish dry overnight since it was rather thick, so if you try this you might want to do that same.

Anyhow, enjoy!

Oh, and leave me a comment telling me what non-crafting household things you’ve used on cards. I’m totally curious! :)

  1. I’ve used real butterfly wings and flowers I pressed on book marks and cards. I also used part of a veggie net bag to make a soccer goal for my grandson’s BD card. One last thing–real bark from our river birch tree to fashion a tree trunk for an outdoorsy card for my nephew. It’s fun to recycle on cards.

  2. Love the idea, Kristina. I too am obsessed with nail polish. I’ve used aluminum soda cans; they emboss beautifuly, alcohol ink it and walla!!

    Hugs,

    Carmen

  3. love this idea now i can use up my really old nail polis. i had some for about 3 years

  4. Great, sparkly card! Love that you used nail polishes. Hee! I am looking forward to this new series. I haven’t used too many hh items and those I have used, aren’t too “creative.” I don’t have any plain solid or open circle stamps so I saved three different size bottles and used them to stamp the open circles. I tried the bottoms for the solid circles but they didn’t work. I’ve cut words out of egg cartons and used them on “farm” cards and/or on some French country/rooster/damask cards I made. Oh, I did use the netting from vegetable bags to complete cover my card, then added die cut and homemade flowers atop. I posted that card in my SCS gallery and it got loads of positive comments. Mmmm. That’s all I can think of right now. :)

  5. Love the card and the nail polish colors – very sparkly! I have used bark from our river birch tree that sheds every year; bleach; coffee filters; different washers and supplies from the hardware store; magazine & catalog pages; anything that I can incorporate into my cards. Thanks so much for your videos – I love them!

  6. oh i just love this card
i have alot of nail polish that is drying up so
so thanks i have used nail polish on other things
but never thought about using it on a card
thank you again and please do make more tips & ideas videos

  7. You really have the moste coolest ideas!!! The most unusual non-crafting thing I used was a fork for creating little bows :) I love your card. Hugs! Mojca

  8. Love the card – almost enough to make me buy some nail polish :) I’m too lazy to be bothered painting my nails. I’ve used a variety of bits as stamps to do backgrounds, the most unusual being a circle of circles that is the left over from kids cap guns. Also things like onion bags to stamp texture on and all sorts of sponges for adding texture too.

  9. After I saw the supply list, I thought only you would come up with using nail polish! Then watching the video I wondered if Stickles would work just before you mentioned them. I’m finally learning from you! Stickles I own, nail polish, none! Can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

  10. In the past I have used the brown, out layer of onions. They can be glued as a background and are very interesting. It will somewhat resemble a wood finish. Or you can glue it to just text paper and punch or die cut. I haven’t tried any of the distress stains, inks or alcohol inks, with the onion skins, but I bet they would be amazing! I guess I better get me some onions to play with!
