Card Videos

IT’S MY BIRTHDAY! Let’s make some birthday cards!

Hello, all! Today is my birthday! Well, technically the day before my birthday. But close enough! So it’s fitting I have a fun video for you featuring birthday cards made with Distress Oxide Inks. All of the cards use new products from Simon Says Stamp’s latest release (which *just* went live)! You can see the entire release HERE.

(Wondering what I used in this video? Everything is linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post, or in the text below. Compensated affiliate links used when possible).

Card 1 – Ink Blending with Oxide Inks

I chose five Distress Oxide Inks to use for all my cards: Peacock Feathers, Seedless Preserves, Picked Raspberry, Ripe Persimmon, and Mustard Seed. For my first card, I blended the inks using blender brushes across white cardstock. After letting the blended inks dry, I then stamped one of the large greetings from the new Big Birthday Greetings stamp set in VersaMark ink and applied white heat embossing powder.

To add a more organic edge, I swiped the VersaMark pad over the edges of the cardstock and then dipped the cardstock into the white embossing powder. Then I heat set it until smooth and melted. A bit of added interest was achieved by spritzing water over the blending.

Card 2 – Stencil Blending & Stamping with Oxide Inks

For my second card, I blended the same Oxide Inks over the Confetti stencil. I also stamped the balloon image from Big Birthday Greetings in each of the colors and die cut them using the coordinating dies.

To finish off the card, I white heat embossed the greeting on vellum and then wrapped the vellum around the card and adhered it on the back of the card. I also adhered the balloon diecuts to the card using a Xyron Sticker Maker.

Card 3 – Ink Blended Diecuts + Blender Pen Coloring with Oxide Inks

Using the same ink blending technique from Card 1, I created an ink blended background using the Distress Oxide Inks. I then die cut the ink blended piece using the “Happy Birthday” die from the Big Birthday Greetings coordinating die set, and the Rounded Alphabet dies (spelling “Happy”). I adhered the letter diecuts to a white card base using the Glue Sponge and Jewel Picker.

I stamped the candle image from Big Birthday Greetings repeatedly below the letters in black ink. Then I squished the Oxide inks onto a palette and picked up the colors with a clear blender pen. I used the blender pen to transfer the color to the candles and color them.

To finish off the card, I used a black Sharpie to add shadows underneath the words and random dots to the card. I also coated the diecut letters with Nuvo Crystal Glaze for a shiny effect.

Card 4 – Rainbow Multicolor Stamping with Oxide Inks

I began this card by prepping the gray background. I pressed VersaMark ink through the Confetti stencil and then applied white embossing powder and heat set it.

To get a multicolor stamping, I used a MISTI stamp positioning tool. I first inked up the bottom corner of the large greeting from Big Birthday Greetings with Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide Ink. I softened the edge of the ink by dabbing it with a paper towel, and then stamped. Then I moved onto the next color, Seedless Preserves. I tilted the ink pad to apply a stripe of ink above the Peacock Feathers area. I softened the bottom and top edge of the ink stripe and then stamped.

Repeat the stamping process with the other colors, making sure to soften the edges of the applied ink so as to aid in the transition of colors.

I finished the card by adhering the multicolor stamped greeting to the front of the gray card stock.

Card 5 – Stamping with Distress Oxide Inks

My final card was super simple and easy! I used the “happy” banner stamps from the Big Birthday Greetings stamp set to stamp in different colors. Then I stamped the large “Birthday” using Hickory Smoke Oxide Ink. I also added an additional greeting using the Tiny Words Birthday stamp set and Versafine Onyx Black ink.

And those are my cards for today! Thanks for stopping by! Remember, you can see the entire new release from Simon HERE. :)

Love all the gorgeous rainbow stamping. Love the smooth background (looks elegant) on your first card and the water droplets (they look more organic and fun). YES, I have put my layers on upside down.

I love your cards and your fixes. I liked the smooth blend in the first one, and I would’ve been so upset if I’d had that happen, but it still looked really cool after you fixed it. And yes, I’d actually hate to admit how many times I’ve stuck things down upside down! I love all your colouring videos – you have an awesome talent!
I hope you have a wonderful birthday tomorrow (it’s already your birthday where I am, lol). It’s my birthday on Friday – we’re almost! Birthday Buddies! :)

Your cards are so beautiful as always. I would love for you to do a video on the Gemini Jr. I’m on the fence as well and debating between Gemini Jr. and Spellbinders Platinum 6. Thanks so much for all the ideas you share. You are so inspiring.

Happy Birthday, Kristina! You are so creative…especially in fixing mistakes! My attempts are usually unsuccessful and end up in the trash. I have tried to become more careful to avoid the “upside down” card trick, but every once in a while….. Love watching the videos and so appreciate you sharing your talent and tips with us. Have a great day and remember, every age is the perfect age.
