Watercolor Week: You NEED a Color Mixing Chart + Altenew Watercolors

Hello all! Welcome back to Watercolor Week! Today I’m trying out another new watercolor set, this time the 36 pan set from Altenew (Altenew | Simon). They sent me the set a while back so I decided to first swatch all the colors, then I create a color mixing chart using only eight of the colors from the set.

(Wondering what I used in this video? Everything is linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post, or in the text below. Compensated affiliate links used when possible).

I used Arches cold press watercolor paper for all of the painting, since it’s a paper I used often.

As for the coloring mixing chart, it was such a valuable exercise! I choose only eight colors out of the 36 colors in the set because of space constraints, and used a narrow masking tape to create the grid chart. I think I will create a full 36×36 color chart at some point, though. I couldn’t believe how many colors I was able to create using only 8 colors!

I’m very familiar with using a color’s complement to darken or gray out the color, but I don’t mix all colors with each other as much. This was eye opening! I think everyone should make a color mixing chart like this for reference in the future.

Along with the 36 pan set (Altenew | Simon), Altenew just came out with additional watercolor supplies. Here is the full release:

I’m just learning and delving into this medium, so from your awesome chart, I am not sure which squares are the original and which have the mix, could you explain how you mix what with what? They sure look like a great set and very pretty! Thank you
