Holiday Card Series 2016 – Day 3

For Day 3 of the Holiday Card Series, I thought I’d try creating a couple cards without any stamps or dies. :) Many readers and YouTube subscribers have mentioned that they would love to see more cards like this, so I’m planning to throw a few into the series this year.

Today’s cards are very simple tree patterns. Just triangles and trunks.

I painted the trees directly onto the watercolor paper for one card, and then painted the trees in masking fluid for the other card (I used Drawing Gum because of the gray color–it was easier to see it as I painted with it). Then I painted over the masking fluid and the tree shapes became negative space.

I mixed different shades of green for the trees and background using Mission Gold watercolors. I purposely used the brighter more yellow-ish green near the top of the cards, and then the more muted greens at the bottom. This creates a sort of ombré effect.

I added a bit of detail with a white Gelly Roll pen to the green trees. I think it looks whimsical and fun. :)

Super easy! You should give it a try! I’m sure you’ll quickly fall in love with these tree cards like I did. :)
